I was installing some new software, specifically rsyncX, and I noticed something peculiar. When I went to double click on the icon to install after I unzipped it, it was just a folder that had the extension .pkg. After some quick searching I found that for some reason the apple installer on my system and gone and disappeared much to my dismay.
This program basically is associated with .pkg files which are software packages, and does the nice little install GUI that you see when you click on the icon that is supposed to be an open cardboard box. So for anyone that runs into this problem, the solution is rather simple.
Simply pop in your system CD (mine was Tiger 10.4), navigate to Applications > Utilities and you'll find an installer icon. Drag this to your Applications > Utilities folder, and you're all set.
Fantastic. Macs are cool.
